Kanturk RFC Mini Rugby 2016/2017 Season

Welcome:

Dear all,

Welcome back to another season of mini rugby at Kanturk RFC. We are all very excited to be back at Knocknacolan and look forward to seeing lots of familiar faces and hopefully some new ones to welcome to our club as well.

The mini rugby team have been doing lots of pre-season work to put together a full and enjoyable programme of events including blitzes, fun days and other surprises such as day trips. We hope that you all enjoy it, making new friends along the way and of course enhance your rugby skills!

The club would like to thank Karen O’Callaghan who is retiring from the role of mini rugby coordinator this year for her huge efforts, especially last season when the poor weather made her job especially difficult.

Finally, the mini rugby directorate would like to express a huge gratitude to our official sponsor “Infinity English College” for their support in the 2016/ 2017 season.

Kind regards,

Jim Geary

Age:

We welcome all boys and girls from the age of 6 onwards.

The following are the age groups for mini rugby.

Player welfare:

The club takes player welfare very seriously and all coaches are Garda vetted in line with IRFU requirements. All coaches are trained by Munster Branch on coaching methods including safety for child welfare. The club ensures that at least one person who has completed the IRFU safe rugby programme is present during training and blitzes. For all interested parents the club will be arranging a safe rugby programme in the near future. You can contact your child’s coach for more details.

Bernadette O’ Leary, the club’s child welfare officer, ensures that these protocols are adhered to by the club in conjunction with the club’s mini rugby directorate.

For any concerns please contact Jim Geary, 086 0881787.

Training:

In an effort to try and avoid clashing with other sports clubs, min rugby training will start on the Sunday, September 4th at 10:00 and will take place every Sunday during September (11th, 18th and 25th).

We will switch back to Saturday training on October 1st at 10:00. Training will then be every Saturday at 10:00 except when the club has AIL fixtures. On these days,  training will be at the earlier time of 09:00. Coaches will notify you of this.

In light of the terrible weather we had last season, the club has secured the use of the Banteer indoor AstroTurf facility for the months of December and January so that we can keep some of our smaller players dry and warm through the winter.

Your head coach will text you regularly to ensure it is clear when and where training is taking place. As soon as we have set all blitz fixtures, we will put the full season’s calendar on the website for review.

Equipment required:

Each child is required to have the following equipment to play mini rugby at the club:

  • Gum shield
  • Boots
  • Warm training gear (gloves and hats are recommended in cold weather)
  • White shorts and green socks for fixtures

Tops with hoods are forbidden for training and fixtures in the interest of child welfare. Sports glasses are not recommended by the IRFU and the club adheres to this protocol.

The mini rugby directorate will arrange for Impact Rugby Ireland to visit the club in September so you have the option to purchase any training gear that is needed. The club has a good rate with Impact Rugby Ireland, making the cost of gear reasonable.

Girls’ tag rugby:

The mini rugby directorate has not yet started this season’s girls’ tag rugby for ages 8 to 13. We will try our very best to kick this off in October or November.

Parents’ involvement in the club:

All those involved in mini rugby at the club are volunteers and the mini rugby directorate is looking for any parents willing to help in any way. This includes organising teas and coffees in the club house on training and at home blitz days, help on blitz days etc.. This is your and your child’s club and we rely on your support and help to maximise the mini rugby experience for your child.

Any suggestions you may have on helping our mini rugby family improve and expand are always appreciated.

If you are willing to help out or have any suggestions, please contact Jim Geary on 086 0881787.
