Report: Kanturk Beat Midleton
Kanturk U17s had a memorable win over Midleton on Saturday morning. Early exchanges were tight with either side failing to get any clear advantage in the opening exchanges. With Kanturk applying pressure on the visitors through some excellent work from hooker Conor O'Donoghue, they were rewarded with an early penalty which was duly converted by Mark Healy. This early score had the effect of allowing Kanturk to open up their play and with some brilliant off loading play between backs and forwards they were soon awarded another penalty which Healy again converted to leave the score 6-0. If scores win games, defence allows games to be won and this was never more true than during the next period of play.Midleton were now pushing hard and seemed to have Kanturk on the rack and only for some tremendous tackling from the home players, Midleton would surely have crossed the whitewash . Having failed to cross Kanturk’s try line, Kanturk again got territory in the oppositions 22, and were awarded two more penalty chances, the right hand upright only denied Healy from making the half time score line 9-0.

Upon the resumption the Kanturk pack really upped the ante and now forced Midleton into a series of errors which allowed Kanturks backs the freedom to make serious inroads into Midleton territory. With full back Sean Piggott now coming into the Kanturk line it was only a matter of time before tries appeared on the scoreboard. Midway through the second half after more sustained pressure on the Midleton line, out half and man of the match Mark Healy registered the game’s opening try. Taking the resulting kick off cleanly Kanturk again entered Midleton’s 22, and another sweeping back move sent Healy in for another try which he duly converted to leave the full time score 18-0.
