Report: Kanturk Secure 2nd Place
As Dan McCabe led his team on to that pitch in Galbally (that now consists of 22) they must have realised that to win there is a rare occurrence. At the end of a bruising encounter many of the big support from Kanturk were heard to say that the monkey had been lifted off their back. A low scoring game full of incident and debatable decisions only added to the entertainment. After 5 mins Darach Meade was denied by the crossbar when his kick looked good only to come back into play. A strange decision just before half time when a dangerous high tackle went unpunished which would have reduced Galbally to 14. Four minutes into the second half a legitimate tackle by Mick Sullivan was harshly punished and sent him to 10 min in the bin. Galbally were reduced to 14 when the scrum half was binned for using his boot at a ruck. This lifted Kanturk and played most of the last 25min in the opponents half.

Kanturk had at least three chances to score a try while Galbally never looked like breaking a strong defence. At 3-3 it was all to play for and play became even more intense, all hands to the wheel and after a 15 metre rolling maul by the rampant Kanturk forwards a penalty had to be awarded. Darach Meade scored to bring his tally to six points and the winning score. It was a hard fought but more than a satisfactory performance. Dominant in the scrum all through and with a different referee would have many penalties and possibly a yellow card, with all forwards playing well special word for front row Nailer. Con O’Sullivan and Brendan Kelleher. With a few knocks and bruises and tired bodies Kellogs with a broken "nose not for the first time” is the most serious. A lot done more to do and another big game next Sunday away to Garryowen in the Munster Junior Cup, A tough assignment but the way this team is playing anything is possible. Again thanks to our supporters who outnumbered the homers by about two or three to one

Kanturk secure place in 5th round of Munster junior challenge cup
Kanturk welcomed St. Mary’s of Limerick to Knocknacolan last Sunday in the fourth round of the Munster Junior Challenge Cup. With an earlier kick off of one o’clock to allow players watch Irelands opening Six Nations match against Wales, there was a degree of anticipation in the air before the game as both teams were anxious to progress further in the competition and spectators were looking forward to an afternoon of exciting rugby both local and international.

St Mary’s kicked off down the hill in the first half with the saints outhalf Sean Lyons testing the turks forwards with a deep ranging ball from the off. Kanturk soon found that the saints forwards reputation of being strong and disciplined to be true, and their position in second of the J2 league justified. But our boys in green like nothing more than a challenge and quickly took control of the game with good ball secured by the pack and a very fast hands by the backs to take advantage of our pacey players. Kanturk played to this game plan throughout the first half against the Saints, Hill and wind alike.

Turks kicker for the day Peter Earlie found his range to touch and the turks lineout worked well to put the backs on the front foot with attacking ball. Four first half tries by John Duggan, Paul Cotter, Gary Pigott and Peter Earlie, two of which were converted by Earlie brought the half time tally to 24-0.

Kanturk management made tactical decisions in bringing on Matt Daly for Bryan O’Neill and Kealan Buckley for Philippe Trippier.

The second half was a completely different affair with the Saints coming out of the starting blocks strong (due to some “gentle encouragement” from management in their half time talk). The saints applied pressure for the next twenty minutes and made their way in to the turks territory time and again- resulting in two tries for the Saints, with one being converted. Conor Breen and Tadgh McSweeney were now introduced into the game for Michael O’Sullivan and Conor O’Sullivan. Kanturk now had to dig in to halt the Saints resurgence and the final twenty minutes of the game were where the turks locked out the opposition using their excellent defensive play. A penalty in the dying minutes of the game by Earlie showed the wind must have switched direction, when it seemed to go backwards and didnt find touch, but Kanturk secured the ball and took the game to the Saints. Kanturk finished with one more try by Michael Twohig, which made the final scoreline 29-12 to the home side.

Special mention has to go to Brendan Kelleher of the pack for his outstanding performance. From the backs it is difficult to pick a single player as all showed what a strong quick backline can do with all Kanturks points coming from the back line.

And then there were two
Kanturk maintained the pressure on Richmond in the Division 1 Munster Junior league after grinding out a 9 points to 7 victory over Skibbereen in this all Cork encounter. Both teams entered the match in joint 2nd position so the stakes were high. Coming off a strong performance in Waterford last week and playing in fortress Knocknacolan there was huge expectation from the Kanturk faithful. The U19's had pulled off a magnificent victory over Limerick giants Young Munster earlier in the day so the mantle lay with the Junior team to produce a similar result.

The game started in frantic fashion with both sides battling vigorously to gain supremacy. Several deep forays into the Skibbereen 22 by Philippe Trippier and Gary Piggott almost yielded scores for Kanturk but the vital try scoring pass or grubber kick would not go to hand allowing Skibbereen to clear their lines. The Kanturk lineout was functioning like a well oiled machine whilst the Kanturk scrum spearheaded by Bryan "Nailor" O'Neill did not yield an inch. Paul Cotter and Darach Meade at 9 and 10 respectively were pulling the strings, quickening the play which suited the mobile Kanturk pack. However despite having the majority of possession in the opening 20 minutes Kanturk could not breach the "Skib" defence and as the half progressed the away team grew in confidence. Several big carries from their loose forwards allowed quick ruck ball which greatly stretched the Kanturk rear guard and only massive hits from the impressive Dan McCabe and man of the match Michael O'Sullivan kept the red and white tide at bay. Eventually the resolute Kanturk defence creaked though and a few missed tackles allowed the rampaging Skibbereen loose head prob to bundle over the Kanturk whitewash with the resulting conversion being scored. Try as they may, Kanturk could not garner an effective response and "Skib" continued to threaten leaving the score 7-0 at half time.

The second half was a dogged tight affair with neither side making any real head way. Playing up the hill but backed by a strong wind, Kanturk tried to impose themselves by playing rugby in the oppositions half and moving the ball quickly but this Skib side continued to justify their league position by thwarting any momentum Kanturk tried to create. With 25 minutes to go the "Turks" management decided to mix things up and introduced Michael "Twigs" Twohig and Conor Sullivan. With a loss certainly ruling out any title hopes, Kanturk begun to realise that a response had to be mounted and fast. An enticing garryowen kicked by Paul Cotter and an effective chase from Twohig resulted in a penalty which Munster's leading junior points scorer Darach Meade duly dispatched. This score instilled some believe into Kanturk and they begun to take the game to Skib. Strong carries from the Kanturk back row put their opponents on the back foot resulting in another penalty for offside. Meade carried out the necessaries and only 1 point separated the teams. Kanturk were now playing with a fierce intensity and aggression matched with controlled discipline. Another penalty was awarded against the Skib number 9 for offside at scrum time (Nailor insisted the penalty was front row related.. Hmmm) and Meade being in a prolific scoring mood split the posts with a great pressure kick. Now leading for the first time in the game, Kanturk had to withstand a late rally from Skib but resolute defending kept the West Cork side at bay for the final minutes. A failed penalty kick in the last action of the game left the score at 9-7 ensuring victory for the North Cork Club. Knocknacolan erupted into scenes of jubilation and an historic victory was topped off by a great night at the annual club quiz.

Kanturk now lay in second place and with only 2 games left in the league its still all to play for. On a separate note, well done to the quiz winners Nek Minnit and also for the outstanding "humming" performance by Johnny "All the Single Ladies" O'Sulllivan.

Kanturk Back to 2nd
Kanturk reclaimed second spot in the Munster Junior Division 1 league on Sunday with a well deserved away win over a talented Waterpark side. After a disappointing previous outing against Crosshaven, the Turks handed starting berths to Brendan Kelleher (prop), Pete McCabe (hooker), Keelan Buckley (wing) and the fit again Philippe Trippier (centre). The game started at a frantic pace and it was clear from the off that the long journey to Waterford was not going to be an issue for the travelling side who took an early 3-0 lead through the boot of fly half Darach Meade. Kanturk were then hit with a double blow, losing the vastly experienced duo of Richie Philpott and Karlton O’Leary through injury within a five minute spell. The youthful Waterpark side took advantage of perfect underfoot conditions to open up an 8-3 lead with a well struck penalty followed up by a nice try by one of their many impressive backs.

Kanturk needed a quick response and got it. Brian ‘Nailor’ O’Neill and Mick Sullivan started to impose themselves on the game with some monster hits and powerful ball carries. A penalty to Kanturk, decision time 3 points or 7? With the lineout functioning like a well oiled machine all day, Meade kicked to the corner and the resulting lineout saw Captain Dan McCabe bundle his way over from the back of a driving maul. Meade then swung over a peach of a conversion from the left touchline to give the Turks a 10-8 lead going in to the break.

The second half continued much as the first half had finished, high paced full of running a good spectacle for the large crowd of travelling support. The Kanturk team were made feel especially at home by fourth official Ger Cotter patrolling the far touchline. His son Paul, marshalling his pack of troops like a little general helped his team settle in to a good rhythm which saw the away side control possession of the ball. Good territorial kicking from Meade saw Kanturk advance in to Waterpark's 22 and Cotter did not have to be asked twice when given a sniff of the try line he dived over to put the Turks 15-8 ahead. Meade made it 3 out of 3 with the conversion, 17-8.

Waterpark upped their game and for the next ten minutes put some good phases together, getting all the way to the Kanturk try line and exerting a lot of pressure. Try as they might, however, they could not breach Kanturk’s resolute defence. Both backs and forwards put their bodies on the line and in the end great defensive work from O’Neill and Trippier saw Kanturk turn over the ball and clear the lines. With both sides pushing hard, tempers flared on occasion and a disagreement in midfield between a Waterpark centre and Gary ‘Pacquiao’ Piggott earned both players ten minutes in the bin. O’Neill then capped off a good days work when he took a ball 5 metres out from the Waterpark line and, after some dainty footwork, pivoted and barged his way over for his sides third try of the day. 4 out of 4 from Meade saw him finish the day on 100% success rate and Kanturk finish on a scoreline of 24-08.

No doubt there will be a few sore bodies but second in the league and all to play for again. Roll on the green machine, Skib at home next week. Last but by no means least, after a fine game on the wing, John Duggan (32) answered all of his critics and they can’t now begrudge him his email address speedywinger@hotmail.com !

Kanturk move in to 2nd after bonus point win
Kanturk kept up their winning ways yesterday when they played host Thurles. Kanturk have failed to beat Thurles in the last 4 occasions they’ve met and Sunday’s meeting was their chance to put this right. Kanturk started strongly and following good forward play, Kanturk got the ball wide, where Daithi Fitzpatrick used he’s pace to score in the corner. Darach Meade added the extra points. Good ball carries from Dan McCabe and Barra Buckley gave Kanturk a good attacking platform and quick ruck ball meant the backs could attack at will. This sustained pressure resulted in Kealan Buckley touching down in the right corner for he’s first ever try for the 1st XV, Meade added the points once again.
Thurles struggled and after continued pressure, Kanturk’s full back Peter Earlie crashed through the Thurles defence and with support from Duggan and McAuliffe the backs mauled over the line, with Earlie touching down to the right of the posts. Meade un-characteristically missed the conversion which ended he’s streak of 12 from 12 conversions in a row. Unlucky number 13.
Thurles conceded a penalty in front of the posts just before the half and Meade added the points.
22-0 to the home side heading into the break.

The second half saw Thurles improve and they put Kanturk under pressure in the scrum. However Kanturk’s defence held strong with hard tackles going in from both backs and forwards. Kanturk regained dominance with a slick back move putting Kealan Buckley darting up the right wing but a good covering tackle from the Thurles full back stop him on the 22. Kanturk re-organised quickly and put the ball through the hands, where John Duggan spotted a gap and took his 56 try for the club and secured the bonus point.
To their credit Thurles dug deep and after some good line-out play the Thurles out half scored under the posts, he also added the 2 points.
The boys in green responded immediately when Thurles kick the ball to Peter Earlie who chipped the defence and recovered the ball before putting Kealan Buckley away in the corner for he’s 2nd try of the day.
The management team of Murphy, Fitzgerald and Fitzpatrick made apt substitutions at the right times and Kanturk closed out the game. A professional performance from Kanturk, who move another step closer to the top of Division 1.

Kanturk Keep On Track
Kanturk maintained their fine form in this their sixth game in the Munster Junior league. Having lost to Tralee earlier in the season in the Junior Challenge Cup they knew that they were going to face a stiff task especially as they kicked off into a strong wind. Kanturk started brightly and for the first 10 minutes dominated the game with the forward's winning the battle up front and the backs threatening in attack, but against the run of play they found themselves trailing 7-0 after Tralee scored a soft try which they converted. From a lineout outside the 22 Tralee all too easily picked and drove to the line and while there was a question mark over a double movement the try stood. Moments later Kanturk lost John O`Sullivan to what looked to be a serious hand injury and some might have thought that the Gods were against Kanturk but after an absence of 10 minutes John was back on the field in what was a miraculous recovery. Kanturk were going well now but could not capitalise on their dominance, the pack led by their outstanding captain Dan McCabe continued to edge the bruising battle up front, with solid scrums and clean lineout’s Paul Cotter had quality ball to give to his dangerous backline but persistent infringements by Tralee were keeping Kanturk at bay and although the penalties were coming it was Darach Meade`s 4th attempt that finally got the better of the strong wind to make it 7-3 with 5 minutes to halftime. On the restart Kanturk infringed and Tralee were awarded a penalty which was well kicked by Gareth Walsh to leave the score 10-3 in the Kerry men’s favour at half time.

The strong wind was now in Kanturk`s favour and they picked up where they left off in the 1st half, strong play by the forwards again resulted in a penalty but this time the referee had enough and produced a yellow card leaving Tralee down to 14. McCabe smelling blood passed on the penalty kick and instead went for the corner and after a sustained attack on the Tralee line John O`Sullivan eventually raced over to score in the corner. It was back to business as usual for Meade as he split the posts to tie the game at 10-10. Credit to Tralee they upped their game and for the next 15 minutes had the lion’s share of possession but were met with a fierce defence and rarely passed kanturks10 metre line. When Kanturk did have possession they lost it too easily, the lineout began to malfunction, the ruck became messy with slow ball the result. A draw looked to be on the cards but the sideline reacted and emptied the bench and with fresh legs aboard the tie started to swing back in Kanturks favour. Tralee could no longer withstand the pressure and finally conceded a penalty in front of the posts which Darach converted to the relief of the travelling support. Dan McCabe uncharacteristically knocked on the restart to give Tralee a rare visit to the 22 and there were nervous moments but a powerful drive by Kanturks pack in the resultant scrum earned them a penalty and the danger was averted. In the remaining minutes Tralee tried to penetrate the Kanturk defence but it was to be in vain. Final score Tralee 10 Kanturk 13.

Kanturk hold off Persistent Pirates
After the highs of our win over Clonmel, it was a tough task to repeat the same level of performance. Kanturk started well and field position put us into the Kilbrin Road corner. Good throw by Conor O Sullivan lead to a massive drive with Karlton O' Leary claiming the touchdown. From the corner, Darragh kicked an impressive conversion. Failure to claim the kick offs put us on the back foot at times and Cobhs quick play and tap penalty resulted in a try for the visitors. However, a good run up the line by Peter Earlie gave us good territory again. The continued pressure eventually paid off as MIck Sullivan and Dan McCabe went over the line only to be held up. A solid scrum and quick pass by the captain lead to Paul Cotter going over in the Club house corner. Another difficult conversion was slotted over By Darach Meade.

Kanturk lost Gary Pigott to a broken nose but more importantly, Gary may have lost a Calvin Klein Modelling contract that he was in contention for these last few months. The joys of Junior Rugby. Keelan Buckley, who impressed in the B game replaced Gary and showed that the Knocknagree GAA training has a high fitness emphasis. More good work by both forwards and backs lead to a penalty but instead of wasting time asking for the tee etc, Meado decided to drop kick it over from almost 40 yards. Halftime 17-5.

The second half with the sun in our eyes was largely a defensive one. A few mistakes and incorrect decisions kept us under pressure. However, last ditch tackles and Cobh knock ons kept them out till 8 minutes to go when good play by their backs lead to a converted try. We held on for the win as the last few plays as the pirates were on the attack. We face a make or break game now against Tralee next Sunday in the Kerry venue. Having lost to Tralee 9-6 in the cup already this season, a huge game should be in prospect. Hopefully the travelling support that was in Clonmel can make their way across the border to the kingdom.

Kanturk Overcome Clonmel
With the new Drink Driving laws in place last week-end a Bus was the order of the day to carry the team and thirsty supporters.

Against the wind in the first half, in the fablous grounds of Clonmel most people would think the visitors would struggle. However, these players showed their intent early on and carried through the entire first half. The first penalty to Kanturk was greeted with a roar that was heard in the Bulmers factory 3 miles away. The Kanturk team let Clonmel know they were in for a game and so did the vocal Kanturk supporters. Like all games, the battle up front was key and all the forwards impressed. Mick Sullivan and Karlo putting in big hits, The Nailor and Johnny Sull making big gains. After an earlier miss, D Meade curved a lovely ball over the post for Kanturk to lead 3-0.

The lose of Phillipe Trippier to injury was certainty a blow as his catching from Garryowens has been immense. His linking up with Back 3 Gazza, Pete Early and Daithi Fitz kept the Clonmel backline on thier toes. However, Steven "Bulldog" McAulliffe was an able replacement in the center with John Duggan [ Fresh from making a best man sppech for his brother Denis the day before] who also make a few good inroads.

The tackling and defense out of Kanturk was impressive. Conor O Sullivan making numerous tackles and was hitting his men including the imperious Richie Philpott in the lineouts. A good break by Barra Buckley and good scrum technique lead to another Meade Penalty. With 25 to go, Kanturk keep the pressure on and another trademark hit by Mick Sull spilled the ball near the Clonmel Tryline. A neat little backheel that Lionel Messi would be proud of by Richie lead to halfback P. Cotter diving over for his first try of the season. The distance covered to score may not have been much, but at 5-Ft 6 inchs, every distance covered is a lot for the SFO founder. Meade slotted over from the corner flag and we were sucking diesel.

Clonmel fought back to score a try that they deserved. They have won a lot of games this season and have a good number of high quality players. However, towards the end of the game, Coach Mike Murphy [assisted by Pat Fitz and Kieran Fitz] made good use of the bench introducing Big Damo for a few carries, Ned English for his usual workrate and Bobo who won a massive penalty with his Front Row Colleagues. Darach Meade who got the better of his opposite number and former Senior Munster player Ben Martin slotted the penalty 16-5. Dan McCabe covered massive ground and lead like all great captains.

A major talking point in the dressing room after the game were the supporters. The sheer volume of them. The noise they made. And how happy they were when we won. Their impact on the game was a major factor in key moments. The players are humbled that people give up their free time and spend money to travel to support the team.Nailor, sang in the dresing room, Margaret Cotter sang in Clonmel Carpark, Twigs sang on the bus, Jimmy did the MC, Mick Breen organised the logistics and everyone got drunk. All in all a good Bank Holiday Week-end.

A great win but still early days in the league. Unfortunately, the injury list is increasing and with 3 games over the next 3 week, the squad will be severly tested.

Cobh at home this week is another big test for Kanturk and with the Second XV playing Cork Con beforehand, a great day of rugby is expected.

Report:

Kanturk have been a very strong team at home over the last few years but were going to be up against it in the first division. However after today’s win against Old Christian’s they are two from two at home. However it wasn’t the start Kanturk wanted after spending the first few minutes attacking they were caught on the counter attack and left scrambling. Old Christian’s went down the blind side and got in for the try which they converted. It was a double blow for Kanturk as Luke McCabe’s last ditch tackle to stop the try could have cost him his season as he was stretchered off with a bad ankle injury. Kanturk bounced back however and good attacking play led to Darach Meade slotting a penalty leaving them trailing 7-3. Kanturk kept the foot on and a great break by Meade led to him crashing over for the try which he converted to put Kanturk up 10-7. Kanturk’s defence was again their catalyst for attack as after two or three phases against the sturdy defence Old Christian’s were forced to kick the ball away and Kanturk dealt with the kick with Peter Earlie in particular turning the kick into a counter attack. Johnny O’Sullivan caught a kick and broke a string of tackle to get Kanturk into Old Christian’s half. After some good work from the forwards Conor O’Sullivan made a great break and was held up just short of the Christian’s line. After quick ruck ball by Bryan O’Neill and co Meade fed Dan McCabe who in turn passed to John Duggan who crashed over for the try. Old Christian’s set piece gave Kanturk trouble at times and they kept attacking and were awarded a penalty on the stroke of half time which they converted to leave the score 20- 10 to Kanturk.

At the start of the 2nd half Meade then slotted a difficult penalty however Christians’ attacking efforts were rewarded with a penalty of their own to cancel Meade’s out. Christian’s were playing a lot of rugby in Kanturk’s half but the Kanturk defence was up to the task and after all Christian’s attacking all they had to show for it was two more penalties one of which they converted. The score was now 23 – 16 and there was only a converted try between the sides. Kanturk finished the stronger and sealed the game with a try by Bryan O’Neill at the final whistle. O’Neill was held up short but pumped the legs and with a second effort and a few players on his back he went over for the try. Meade converted and the final whistle blew. Kanturk were happy after the game but are left regretting their poor performance in Richmond which would have seen them at 3 wins out of 3 but they can still be happy with 9 points from three games do far.

Report:

Kanturk felt like they had to ammend for last weeks loss and started strong. Both teams were very physical with some bone crushing hit put in from both sides. None more so than a big tackle from Kanturk's ageless Mick Sullivan. His tackle early on set the tone for the whole game. The first half was a tight affair and a tale of defence. Kanturk's scrum was excellent with old head Bryan O'Neill a thorn in the side of the Kilfeacle front row. Kanturk were six nothing up at the break thanks to two Darach Meade penalties afeter 10 and 25 minutes.

Kanturk were down the hill in the second half and carried on where they left off scoring a penalty quickly after the restart. Kanturk then had a period with backs to the wall when a very good Kilfeacle side kept knocking on the door. Kanturk soaked up wave after wave of attack and the defence of Kanturk was exceptional. Mick Sullivan, Dan McCabe and Bryan O'Neill standing out with Richie Philpott and Johnny O'Sullivan causing problems for the Kilfeacle line out. At one stage a kilfeacle arm crossed the try line only to be pulled back across the line by a combined effort from Johnny O'Sullivan and Garry Pigott to deny the try. Kanturk finally put the game away when Luke McCabe chased a Darach Meade kick and won the ball back before off loading to Darach Meade who ran in 40 metres unchallenged for the score which he also converted rounding off a good day for the Kanturk 10. Kanturk held out and refused to give away a score.

Kanturk too strong for Kilfeacle
The Junior XV had their first home game of the entire season and after the disappointment of last week, a victory of any kind would have been welcomed. However, a 16-0 win is very encouraging for the season. Unfortunately, the game was held up for a while just before half time due to a horrific leg injury to the Kilfeacle out-half. We wish him a speedy recovery and would like to thank all those who helped out. The players appreciate that we are lucky to have Dr.Cormac Lyons as our club doctor.

Three penalties to Darragh Meade settled Kanturk. And With 10 minutes to go on our own line, a great steal by Johnny Sullivan and a great chase by Luke McCabe who off-loaded to Meade who raced from 60 meters out to score under the posts - D. Meade 16- 0 Kilfeacle.

With such a great performance compared to the week before, it is unfair to single out names but captain Dan McCabe was immense. Golden Oldies Mick Sullivan and Brian O Neill let it be known that they are no way near finished in the jersey. Great tackling on our line by props Bobo and Karlo kept the Tipp visitors scoreless. We now look forward to Old Christians next Sunday and hope another big crowd will turn up again. The large crowd certainty spurred on the players and with 2 home games this Sunday, value for money should be guaranteed.

Kanturk Lose Opener
Kanturk could end up looking back at this match at the end of the season rueing not coming away with the win and possibly even with a winning bonus point. Kanturk started off slowly and paid for it dearly. Richmond scored a try from a pick and drive close to the Kanturk line. Richmond kept the foot on the throat and added two tries in quick succession. Both tries went through their backs hands and were scored on the wing. Only one of the tries were converted and Richmond led 17-0. Richmond's full back was very dangerous and he counter attacked every chance he got and was a constant thorn in Kanturk's side. Kanturk could have dropped the heads but rallied back instead. They were awarded 3 penalties in a row but were a difficult distance out and Darach Meade narrowly missed. The Kanturk forwards got on top of The Richmond pack for the rest of the first half and played extremely well. On one such occasion Darach Meade received good quick ball compliments of the forwards and kicked a great cross field kick to winger Peter Earlie who fielded a great ball over his head. A last ditch tackle saved the try but he set up the ball and Garry Pigott fed Meade who dinked his way through the Richmond defence and stretched out for the try which he converted himself. Kanturk had finally found their feet and looked dangerous. Newcomer Philippe Trippier then crashed over with players on his back after another great break by Meade who grew more and more into the game. Meade again converted and Kanturk were within 3 at the half.

Kanturk now had all the momentum and bar a few minutes defending their line at the start of the second half it was all Kanturk. Dan McCabe was impressive throughout and the Kanturk captain seemed to get the most from his forwards who played well as a unit. Kanturk were knocking on the door and eventually got a penalty that Meade kicked to leave the game tied. The game was back and forth and it looked like Kanturk would have the fitness to take victory until against the run of play a dropped ball and a hack ahead had Kanturk scrambling. Kanturk looked to have the ball secured but it squirted out and the Richmond player only had to pick the ball and fall over the line for the try. It was converted and Richmond had a late 7 point lead. Kanturk then knocked on at a vital stage and gave back the ball to Richmond. Richmond kept it tight and ran out the clock. They gave away a scrum right at the death and Kanturk had one more play. The won their scrum and went blind. Then Richie Philpott carried the ball and Kanturk got all the way to Richmond’s 22 but the game finally ended with a Kanturk knock on. Kanturk will move forward to next week’s home game against Kilfeacle but they will still wonder what if?

Kanturk Lose Opener
Kanturk lost a close encounter with League favourites in Limerick last Sunday. Kanturk were a little starstruck in the first 20 minutes going behind 17-0. Many supporters feared the worst and a a cricket score on the cards. However, the team fought back with great character scoring some nice tries. After numerous phases of play, Darach bulldozed over under the post to get our league campaign off. Another Meade break put Philippe Trippier away and with a defender hanging off just made the line. This brought it to 17-14 at halftime.

Kanturk started brightly in the second half and after sustained pressure a Meade penalty brought it level. A disallowed try by Luke McCabe was a major talking point. A loose ball, 10 mins from time was hacked through by Richmond who ended up scoring and converting to go 7 ahead. That is how it finished 24-17 with Kanturk attacking the tryline to draw level. The players were bitterly disappointed as it was a game that could have been won. Strong displays by young debutant prop Pete McCabe and Richie Philpott who has returned after a few seasons out with injury was very evident. The squad hope to bounce back in their first Home game of the Season Vs Kilfeacle this Sunday @ 2.30.
