Kanturk u-18s beat Cork Con
Kanturk under-18 rugby team produced their best performance this season in defeating a much fancied Cork Constitution side in the second round of the under-18 cup. From the kick-off the Kanturk pack took this game by the scruff of the neck and held on to it firmly until the final whistle. Cork Constitution to their credit were no pushover and fought a tough battle throughout. The game was played at great pace with a feast of open running adventurous play from both sides, the way the game should be played!

The first 25 minutes were scoreless, but then out of nothing Kanturk's Denis O'Brien attacked up the centre when tackled released the ball to his captain Brian O'Leary who further fed it on to Mike Murphy who drew the tackle and sent Damien Crowley over for a marvelous try. Jim Murphy made 7-0 with the conversion. Cork Con not to be denied came right back and were awarded a penalty from the re-start to make it 7-3. It remained like this until half time.

In the second half Kanturk started well but failed to put the opposition away early, despite having the lion's share of the possession. This seemed to give Cork Con spirit and after some fine handling by their backs George Finn, currently an Irish Youth International, crashed over to a try midway through the second half, leaving the score at 8-7. Now Kanturk had to dig deep and their forwards upped the tempo with Trojan work by Joe Barry, Tom Ryan, Mike Murphy and Brian O'Leary, they worked their way back up to the Cork Con 22 metre line. A well won lineout by Richie Philpott set the move in motion, Murphy fed O'Leary who cut back into his pack. He fed flanker Mike Murphy who crashed over for a tremendous match winning try. Despite constant pressure in the last 10 minutes Kanturk defended magnificently to gain a fine win and a well deserved place in the next round of the cup.
