Kanturk claimed their third McCarthy Cup victory in four seasons at Musgrave Park, after an entertaining battle, with a Carrigaline side making their first ever Cup Final appearance. A well organised Kanturk side started strongly with a mixture of running rugby and territorial kicking. The Carrigaline defence was solid through out, and the North Cork side had to wait until the fifteenth minute to register a score, when Dara Meade slotted over a penalty in front of the posts. Carrigaline responded immediately and within two minutes, out-half Donnacha Kiely levelled the scores with a penalty form forty metres out. After some severe pressure in the Carrigaline twenty-two, Dara Meade kicked a penalty on thirty five minutes, giving his side a three point lead at half-time. Kanturk registered the first try of the game after forty-eight minutes. Tim Cremin won a line-out on the five yard line and his strong pack drove over with prop forward Eugene Philpott touching down. The Carrigdhoun outfit never gave up and it wasn't until substitute Stephen Keane followed his own grubber kick, to score a try with five minutes left, that Kanturk were virtually certain of victory. Carrigaline battled until the end, in a bid to score a try, with John Donoghue particularly threatening. Kanturk managed to prevent their opponent from going over and it was a delighted Brian McAuliffe, who accepted the trophy after the match.
