CHARLEVILLE PIP KANTURK IN CUP CRACKER
There were mixed fortunes for Cork teams in Sondays opening round of the Munster Junior Plate. Ballincollig, Muskerry and Kanturk all made their exit. But Bandon made it to round two, as did the North Cork trio of Charleville, Mallow and Fermoy. The local derby slash of Charleville and Kanturk at Smith Road, was a humdinger. The result was in doubt upto the final whistle, with Charleville shading it in the end on a 15-13 score-line. The winners scores came from tries from Tony Moffat and Damien O'Riordan. James Leahy kicked a penalty and Tadgh Cronin a conversion. Kanturk responded with a penalty try converted by Denis O'Brien who also added two penalties. By Peter Ledwith

The Well put in a strong spirited performance at Cois Laoi, to edge out a tough Kanturk team in this opening tie in the Heineken Munster Junior Cup. It was Kanturk, who are currently occupying mid-table in the Second Division of the Junior League who made the more promising start. Darach Meade kicked them into an early three point lead with a penalty, but the Well responded, and a magnificent run by Andy O'Brien, which resulted in a try, that Andy Fynn failed to convert due to a block down from John Duggan.
Kanturk finished the half on a high and received a five point advantage before the break when Bobby Dwyer crashed over for a try that Meade converted.
Paul Cotter's drop goal after the break, increased the North Cork sides lead to eight points, but the Well rallied to get back into the game. Tries by Jason Nagle and Austin Finn and a penalty by Andy Fynn saw the Well overtake Kanturk to go 20-13 ahead. Although Meade cut the deficit with his second penalty, the Well held out for victory.

Kanturk caused a surprise with their 29-14 victory away to Douglas in the Second Division. Their win was helped by the man of the match performance by Brian McMahon. His performance was a big boost to Kanturk who had lost outhalf Darach Meade only minutes before kickoff to injury. Two penalties from Colin Corkery to one from Denys O'Brien gave the home side a 6-3 interval lead. A Denys O'Brien try, converted by O'Brien put Kanturk ahead, but a Corkery penalty and a try from Willie Lehane gave Douglas a14-10 lead entering the final quarter. Kanturk took a slender lead with a try from substitute Tom Ahern. A John Duggan intercept from the twenty-two was converted by O'Brien. Duggan finished off the game as Brendan Cotter intercepted again in his twenty-two and unselfishly passed to Duggan when he might have gone himself, O' Brien duely converted and Kanturk secured all five points.
